2009 USPC test files posted
The official test page, with file downloads, is now up.

This year I decided to include the names of the puzzle contributors in the test, rather than wait until afterwards to give credit where credit is due. Cynical test solvers have already suggested that I'm doing this at the request of one of the publishers newly represented this year. Not true!

I've actually wanted to do this for a while. Historically, I did not include names for fear that solvers would use this information to gain some sort of advantage. Ten years ago, that might have been true. But the list of designers that I use is now pretty consistent. And in recent years there is much better world-wide sharing of puzzles, national and practice tests. The active solvers are likely to know the designers anyhow. So by pre-announcing, the playing field is again level for those curious to do further research on the designers.

There are some possible spoilers with this information. For example, knowing that a Masyu puzzle is from Nikoli, rather than Dave Tuller, might tell you something about your solving experience and how you might approach the puzzle--since one is assuredly hand-constructed while the other is likely computer-generated. That is an interesting theoretical discussion, and I look forward to hearing people's thoughts beforehand, and reaction afterwards.

I hope to be a little more chatty this year; I see that I'm picking up this blog after two years of inactivity. Last year I went on vacation the day after the test, and did most of the scoring from a wi-fi enabled cantina near Cozumel. The scoring might be disrupted again this year if I attempt to relive past WSOP glory in Vegas on Monday. Catching up on sleep would be a much better choice.

Well, as much as I'd like to forget that this test existed (bad solving and 2 typos!), I should probably put some impressions down.

I think that the instructions should include before and after diagrams whenever possible. Since it didn't seem like you were trying any surprises (like the old hex-grid ones), I think that clarity is worth the addition to print time. I could imagine a fairly new puzzler assuming that the outside numbers on the Inside/Outside corral would be shaded, because that's how they appeared on the example solution, for instance. Heck, for a minute I was trying to figure out if 'cell' in triangular skyscrapers referred to the triangle, or if we'd be given a grid of squares and we had to figure out which way to divide them. The only way I was sure was from remembering his set of puzzles in last year's 24 hour competition.

For the test itself, a few thoughts on answer strings. Some answers were very time-consuming and difficult to double check, like the 2-3 maze. I think that one could have used something like have the example count the steps, and make the string "Number of steps, followed by every number in the (say) 6th row". I think that typing '22,10,16,11,15,12,5,13' would be less accident prone than 2332232323333223233322. I'd like to think the fences answer string could be improved (as I messed this one up, and the same thing on the 2008 German test), but maybe I just need a brain. I don't know if any people messed up Sum Thing's left to right, but it could have been simpler if there was an A-I underneath each one, and just input the numbers in the order given there (the left to right was clear, but took some double-checking to be confident). The yajilin answer string, on the other hand, was much improved (in my view).

Well I guess that's enough for now. As this seems to be focusing on the negative, I feel like I should emphasize that these are minor nits, and I (and I'm sure everybody) appreciate the time and effort that you and the constructors put into this competition.

I haven't taken part in the USPC for years now, but this year's looked like being a lot of fun. It was. Thank you for compiling it, and thanks to the puzzle authors for their work!
